13th February 2024 to 26th April 2024
Shetland, Scotland
Introduction
Ness Engineering Ltd is a leading Electrical, Mechanical, and Building Services company based in Shetland, Scotland, known for its commitment to efficiency, innovation, and quality in various sectors since 1986.
Alongside, Boss Cabins, the UK’s premier welfare cabin manufacturer, is renowned for its dedication to innovation and sustainability in the design and manufacture of welfare cabins, continually aiming to reduce environmental impact through significant advancements such as the Solar ecowelfare Unit range.
The Requirement
Ness Engineering Ltd required sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly welfare units for their diverse projects across Shetland.
They sought a solution that would not only meet their operational needs but also align with their environmental and sustainability goals, reducing carbon footprint and operational costs.
The Solution
Boss Cabins supplied Ness Engineering Ltd with four ecowelfare 12ft 7 Person Canteen / Twin Toilet units.
These solar-powered, Sustainable Eco Welfare Units are designed to offer a significant reduction in generator use and carbon emissions while providing a comfortable and silent operation environment.
The units were deployed for use in various locations around Shetland, starting from 13th February to 26th April 2023.
The Conclusion
The ecowelfare units demonstrated exceptional performance during the 53-day case study period. Notably, one unit operated with 100% solar power, while the others showed high percentages of solar power usage (98%, 93.4%, and 88.3%), resulting in a combined generator runtime of just 7 hours and 37 minutes. This led to a substantial reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, with at least 1631 litres of fuel saved and a reduction of 4177kg of CO2 emissions, which increased to 5154kg when including Scope 3 emissions.
Ness Engineering achieved an average weekly cost saving of £463 on fuel, with additional savings from reduced need for generator and toilet servicing, bringing the total weekly savings to £694.60 across all units. Over the 53-day period, the total savings amounted to approximately £5259.
The deployment of Boss Cabins’ ecowelfare units at Ness Engineering Ltd’s projects in Shetland exemplifies the tangible benefits of integrating sustainable, solar-powered welfare solutions into the construction and engineering sectors. These units not only meet the operational demands of site welfare but also significantly contribute to environmental conservation efforts and cost reduction strategies. This case study underscores the potential for sustainable innovations to transform industry standards and operational efficiencies, paving the way for a greener, more cost-effective future in site welfare management.
